Review

The theme of this episode is dishonesty. Not surprising, I guess, for a detective novel, but here the dishonesty is mostly of the everyday no-investigator-required sort: the petty thief at the kiosk, the shakedown artist waitress, the illegal bar owner, the person who doesn’t report having scraped another driver’s car. As usual, there is not much tension in the novel: we needn’t fear that a main character will be bumped off. But there is a bit of concern for Mma Ramotswe, who seems to have made a serious error of judgment that has come back to plague her. But in the end justice prevails, lessons are learned, and life goes on.
