Review

Grace Makutsi decides to open a restaurant, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni has to make some adjustments to his business, Precious Ramotswe enters into an unusual business deal, and Mma Potokwane intervenes in unexpected ways. As always, the story is interesting, but the focus of the book is on the characters, who remain true to form and provide the author with plenty of material for the sermonettes that conclude most chapters. From a less congenial author than Alexander McCall Smith the formula would be saccharine and annoying; but he somehow manages to carry it off, so that the result is engaging and uplifting rather than trite or condescending.
