Review

(My review on goodreads)

I usually like books about language and linguistics, but this one left me cold right from the start, I probably shouldn’t rate or review it since I wasn’t able to finish it. The book discusses aspects of each of the top 20 most widely spoken languages, in rank order by number of speakers. Each section begins with a summary table listing the basic characteristics of the language, followed by an essay by the author which may, or may not, tell the reader something interesting or useful about the language. Maybe I was just feeling grumpy but the essays just didn’t work for me.
